Information
on DOC campgrounds
Bookings: These are essential. Spaces are limited and most campgrounds
are booked out
during the holiday season. Tel. 09-429 0044 (International: +64-9-429
0044).
Fires: Beacause of the high fire risk on Great Barrier Island, campfires
are only permitted
at DOC fireplaces provided at Akapoua and Whanagaparapara campgrounds.
Use wood only if it is supplied. Do not destroy native vegetation.
Dogs: Dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted on conservation
lands, including
campgrounds. All campgrounds are near special wildlife habitats, home of endangered
birds
like the brown teal. If you bring any pets, don't be offended if you are asked
to leave.
Camp Fees: Fees are payable at time of booking. Otherwise, a self-registration
system is
in operation at each campground, although a campground supervisor may collect
fees
during peak periods. Adults $6 per night, Children 11 - 15 years $3 per
night,
Pre-schoolers: Free, Vehicles: $1 per night.
